Why do we take oestrogen and progesterone in different ways?

It’s one of the most common HRT questions — and the answer comes down to safety and how your body processes each hormone.

✨ Oestrogen works best (and safest) transdermally — think patches, gels or sprays.

When oestrogen goes through the skin, it bypasses the liver, which means:

🌸 Lower risk of blood clots
🌸 More stable hormone levels
🌸 Fewer side effects for many women

✨ Progesterone, on the other hand, works best orally.

Micronised progesterone (the body-identical form) is designed to be absorbed through the gut, then gently metabolised by the liver.

This process actually helps it become more effective at protecting the uterus — which is essential if you're taking oestrogen and still have a uterus.
